The seas are a’rockin and a’rollin worse than we’ve seen so far. Most of us are happily doped up to avoid turning up our own dinners. Suddenly the everyday motions have turned into a hazardous workout – pinballing off walls in the hallway, trying to go up a down staircase, and even bracing against the walls of our bunk to avoid falling onto the floors. For those who did sleep, they woke to an aftermath of overturned trash cans, dangling phones transformed into havoc-wreaking pendulums, and all my belongings strewn about the common room after the suitcases crashed off the shelves.
Watch is thankfully uneventful, meaning for the most part things are going well since the engine failure a few days ago (Jack will be posting on this later). We seem to be playing a hide-and-seek game with Streamer 1. In the morning, it was declared dead. This afternoon, after some tinkering and apparently a strong dose of good mojo, it’s back! Now we just hope not to piss it off again…
Some other changes – whereas we had planned to complete a transect on the other side of Kodiak, it has been decided that we’ll reschedule this final portion of the trip to cover old ground and hopefully be nearer to Dutch Harbor should anything go awry.
The five undergraduates have also been given a new, secondary assignment: to compose a film documentary on our experiences aboard the Langseth. Of course we’ll include the academic necessities, but most importantly we plan to document the following:
- Andy’s brilliant Gollum impersonations
- Kelly’s attempt to ride a treadmill (aka mechanical bull) in unfriendly waters
- The endless array of meat products provided every lunch and dinner
- Jamming out to rock music while editing multibeam bathymetry data
- Baking with the kitchen staff (my rice pudding the other day either went very well, or people onboard are simply too nice to tell me otherwise)
… and of course the list grows every day as the regular schedule and uneventful watches lead to ever more unorthodox means of filing the time.
